The Experience

“You smell the forest before you see the bears,” our guide Dan said as we pulled up near Zarnesti. He was right—pine needles and wet earth, sharp in the air. I didn’t expect to feel so much watching those rescued brown bears at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary. Some of them lumbered through the trees, others just lay in patches of sunlight. Dan told us about their old lives in cages—he sounded angry but also proud that Romania has this place now. Kids under five can’t go in (sanctuary rules), which made sense when one bear got a bit too curious about our group.

The drive through the Carpathians after that—honestly, I lost track of time just staring out at those mountains. Bran Castle appears suddenly, perched on its rock like it’s waiting for a storm. It’s smaller than I pictured from all those Dracula stories, but inside it’s a maze: creaky stairs, stone walls cold to touch, rooms with old photos and armor. A Romanian couple ahead of us whispered about Vlad Tepes (the “real” Dracula) and laughed when I tried to say his name right—nope, still can’t do it.

Brasov felt lighter somehow after all that history. Cobblestones underfoot, pastel buildings around Council Square, buskers playing something soft by the Black Church. We had free time to wander or grab coffee—I sat outside with a pastry watching people greet each other with little nods and handshakes. The ride back to Bucharest was quiet; maybe everyone else was thinking about bears or castles too. I still think about that view from Bran’s windows sometimes—you know?
