The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Brasov hotel and a drive to the trailhead in the Piatra Mare range, part of the Southern Carpathians. A 45-minute hike through meadow and forest paths brings you to the canyon entrance. Once there, you decide whether to rest at the meadow or enter the gorge itself with your guide.

Inside the canyon, you spend roughly 15 minutes crossing bridges and climbing each of the near-vertical metal ladders that give the canyon its name. The rock walls rise around you, and water rushes past as you ascend. This is not a scramble. The ladders are fixed and your guide is with you the whole way. The experience is thrilling but controlled, and the close-up views of the waterfalls and the chasm itself are what make the climb worth the effort.

After you exit the gorge, your group regroups and you pick the return route: a faster 1.5-hour walk back through forest and glades, or a longer 2 to 3-hour trail if you want to move slower and take in more of the landscape.
