The Experience

Your guide texts to say he's running ten minutes late — the road up from Brașov is slower than usual — and you're standing outside your hotel wondering if you packed the right shoes. Then he arrives, checks your boots (sturdy and waterproof, good), and you're heading into the Carpathian Mountains with a small group, no more than eight of you. The route depends on weather and what your legs can handle: either five hours or seven, through the Zarnesti Gorge or across high meadows where shepherds are actually out there with their flocks, not in a museum somewhere. This is the thing about Piatra Craiului National Park — it's one of those places that hasn't been smoothed over yet.

The hike itself moves through three kinds of landscape. You start in forest, dense and cool even in summer, then break into open pasture where the light changes completely and you can see the ridge line ahead. If you go the longer route, you cross the Zarnesti Gorge, which is narrow enough that the walls feel close, and the path gets technical — not dangerous, but you're using your hands, picking your footing. Your guide points out the old shepherding routes, explains how cheese gets made in the mountain huts, tells you the history of the name: Piatra Craiului, "The Stone," came from a Hungarian citadel built in the 14th century to guard the southern border of Transylvania. Between June and September, there's a stop at an authentic sheep farm, which means you're actually inside someone's working operation, not a tourist version of it.
