The Experience

Li waved us over near the old city gate — I’d barely finished my coffee when she grinned and asked if we’d tried “kürtőskalács” yet. (I hadn’t, and honestly, still can’t say it right.) Right away, she had us weaving through Brasov’s medieval citadel streets, pointing out how the mountain air always smells a bit like pine and chimney smoke in the mornings. The city’s not loud, but there’s this low hum — trams somewhere, distant church bells. We stopped at Sforii Street, which is so narrow you can touch both walls at once. It’s a weird feeling being squeezed between centuries-old bricks while someone’s laughing behind you because you’re trying to take a selfie and almost drop your phone.

The Black Church loomed up just as clouds started rolling in — darker than I expected, all that soot from old fires. Li told us about its history in this casual way, not like a lecture. She pointed out bullet marks on one of the towers (from some revolution or another — I lost track). There were school kids darting around, their backpacks thumping against stone walls. We ducked into St. Nicholas Church for a minute; it was cool inside, smelled faintly of candle wax and old wood. I remember thinking how different it felt from the Greek Orthodox Cathedral we’d seen earlier — lighter somehow.

We wandered along what used to be the defensive wall of the fortress. You can still see bits of it crumbling here and there, moss creeping over stones. Our guide kept tossing out stories about invasions and secret tunnels under Citadel Hill — half-believable stuff that made me want to come back at night just to see if anything felt haunted. The whole day trip from Brasov felt less like ticking off sights and more like following someone who actually lives here (she does).
