The Experience

We barely left the city lights behind when the air changed—warm, a little dusty, but somehow softer than I expected. Our driver, Khalid, grinned in the rearview and promised we’d “wake up” soon. He wasn’t kidding. The 4x4 hit those first dunes near Sealine Beach and suddenly we were bouncing, sliding sideways, everyone laughing or gripping whatever they could. My heart was pounding (in a good way), and I caught myself grinning like an idiot. There’s something about that endless sand—like you’re on another planet but also completely present.

I tried riding a camel for maybe ten minutes before admitting defeat; they’re taller than they look and have this slow, lurching rhythm that made me feel both regal and ridiculous. The handler gave me this patient smile—he must see tourists wobble every day—and handed me sweet tea in a tiny glass after I climbed down. It tasted earthy and hot, with just enough sugar to cut through the dry air. By then, the sun had dropped low and everything turned gold except for the sea at Inland Sea Beach—honestly didn’t expect to see water out here at all.

Later we just stood there listening to nothing but wind moving over sand. No traffic, no hum of city life—just silence that felt heavy and light at once. Our guide pointed out constellations I’d never seen so clearly before (I’m still not sure if I spotted Orion or just pretended).
