The Experience

We started rolling out of Lisbon just after 9 — still a bit foggy, but our guide Sofia said that’s normal for Sintra mornings. She picked us up right at our hotel (I was honestly relieved not to deal with trains or buses). The drive is only about 40 minutes but it felt quicker, maybe because Sofia told us stories about Portuguese kings and pointed out the crazy green hills as we got closer. I didn’t expect the air to smell so different — piney and damp, almost sweet somehow.

Pena Palace really does look like something from a storybook, all reds and yellows against the mist. We walked straight past this snaking line of people waiting for tickets — I could feel them watching us breeze through with our pre-booked entry. Sofia grinned and said, “You’re royalty today.” Inside, she let us go at our own pace. The tiles were colder than I thought they’d be under my hand, and there’s this one window where you can see all the way back to Lisbon if the clouds lift. I still think about that view.

Afterwards we had time to wander Sintra’s old center — narrow streets full of tile shops and little bakeries. Sofia insisted we try travesseiros (the local pastry) even though we’d just eaten breakfast; warm almond filling, sugar dust everywhere. There was an option to swap the town for Quinta da Regaleira instead (we stuck with Sintra), but now I’m curious about that well everyone talks about. Maybe next time. We got dropped off back in Lisbon before lunch, legs tired but happy. Still picking sugar out of my bag.
