The Experience
The first thing that hit me in Sintra wasn’t the view — it was the smell. Old stone mixed with sweet pastries drifting out of a bakery window as we squeezed past tiled houses. Our guide, João, waved at some woman selling cherries (he knew her name — everyone seemed to know him). I tried to pronounce “Travesseiros” right and got a laugh out of him. The streets here are tight and twisty, like they were made for secrets. We ducked into a chapel for a minute just to cool off; I remember how the air felt different inside — almost damp, but peaceful.
The drive up to Pena Palace was slow, winding through trees that looked older than any building back home. João told us stories about kings who built castles just because they could — I half-listened, half-stared at the flashes of yellow and red through the mist. When we finally stepped out, the wind at the top almost stole my hat. The palace itself is wild — not neat or symmetrical at all. Tiles everywhere, colors clashing on purpose. I touched one wall just because it looked like cake icing (don’t judge me). The view from up there makes you feel tiny in the best way.
Afterwards came my favorite part: wine tasting at a family-run place tucked behind some vines outside town. The owner poured us something crisp and white while explaining how his grandfather started it all. There was bread too — chewy with olive oil — and nobody rushed us. It’s funny how quiet everything felt compared to Lisbon; even the birds sounded different here.
We stopped at Cabo da Roca next, where Europe just…ends. Wind so strong you have to lean into it or risk losing your balance. I tried taking a selfie but mostly got hair in my mouth. On the way back we wandered around Cascais for a bit — lots of people laughing near the beach, kids chasing pigeons by old fishermen’s boats. Somewhere between all that noise and those silent castle walls in Sintra earlier, I realized I’d remember this day more for how it felt than what we saw.
