The Experience
The first thing I remember is the color of Pena Palace—like someone tipped a box of crayons over the mountain. We’d barely gotten out of the car (air conditioning still clinging to my skin) when our guide Sofia waved us up the path, promising we’d beat the crowds. She grew up in Sintra and you could tell; she knew which turn would give us that view over the forest where the mist just hangs between trees. I kept stopping to touch the old stone walls—cool and a bit damp—and I swear you could almost smell eucalyptus mixed with pastry from somewhere down in town.
Afterwards, wandering through Sintra village, Sofia nudged us toward a bakery window for travesseiros. Flaky, sweet, gone in two bites. I tried to say “queijada” properly and got a laugh from an old man behind the counter—he gave me an approving nod anyway. The streets are all uneven cobbles and painted tiles; you have to watch your step but it’s worth it for those little glimpses into courtyards or someone’s laundry flapping overhead. Our day trip from Lisbon had already started feeling like something else entirely.
Quinta da Regaleira was next—a place that feels like it belongs in a storybook or maybe a dream. There’s this well you spiral down, damp air on your face, then tunnels that twist under the gardens. Sofia told us about Masonic symbols and secret societies but honestly I was just trying not to lose sight of her flashlight beam. By then my shoes were gritty from gravel and I was glad for bottled water in the van (small detail but it matters). We passed Monserrate Palace too—didn’t go inside but even from outside it looked like something out of an old movie set.
Cabo da Roca hit me harder than expected—the wind is wild there, salt on your lips, cliffs dropping straight into blue nothingness. It’s loud with gulls and waves smashing below. For a second nobody said anything; even Sofia just let us stand there. After that we drove along the coast past Guincho’s dunes (surfers everywhere), stopped at Boca do Inferno to watch spray shoot up through rocks, then slid into Cascais where people strolled by ice cream shops like they had nowhere else to be. The sun was starting to dip as we headed back toward Lisbon—I kept thinking about that first glimpse of Sintra above the trees.
