The Experience

The first thing I remember is the color of Pena Palace—like someone tipped a box of crayons over the mountain. By then my shoes were gritty from gravel and I was glad for bottled water in the van (small detail but it matters). We passed Monserrate Palace too—didn’t go inside but even from outside it looked like something out of an old movie set.

Cabo da Roca hit me harder than expected—the wind is wild there, salt on your lips, cliffs dropping straight into blue nothingness. It’s loud with gulls and waves smashing below. For a second nobody said anything; even Sofia just let us stand there. After that we drove along the coast past Guincho’s dunes (surfers everywhere), stopped at Boca do Inferno to watch spray shoot up through rocks, then slid into Cascais where people strolled by ice cream shops like they had nowhere else to be. The sun was starting to dip as we headed back toward Lisbon—I kept thinking about that first glimpse of Sintra above the trees.
