The experience

The tuk-tuk picks you up and heads straight into Alfama, Lisbon's oldest quarter, where the streets narrow and climb. You'll ride past the tight alleys and tiled facades that have stood since medieval times, then stop at Santa Luzia Viewpoint near São Jorge Castle: one of the most photographed overlooks in the city. From there the route moves to Portas do Sol, where the guide points out where St. Vincent arrived, and then climbs to Senhora do Monte, the highest point in Lisbon, where the view spreads across the whole city and the Tagus River below.

The National Pantheon, built in 1568, holds the remains of major figures in Portuguese history, artists, politicians, soldiers. Next is São Vicente de Fora Monastery, constructed in 1582, a church that anchors the neighborhood's eastern edge. Both stops let you step out and stand in front of the architecture itself, not just pass by it.
