The Experience

The morning air in Lisbon was still cool when our driver pulled up outside our hotel—right on time, Mercedes gleaming. We set off for Évora, winding through Alentejo’s open countryside. The fields were dotted with olive trees and the odd stork’s nest perched on a chimney. There’s something about that first glimpse of Évora’s whitewashed walls that makes you sit up straighter.

Our first real stop was the Chapel of Bones. I’ll admit, nothing quite prepares you for it. The scent inside is faintly musty, almost like old books, and the walls are covered—literally—with human bones. Our guide explained how Franciscan monks built this as a reminder of life’s fragility. It’s not creepy so much as strangely peaceful; I caught myself whispering without even meaning to.

We wandered over to Praça do Giraldo next, where locals sip bicas at Café Arcada and kids chase pigeons across the cobbles. The wrought-iron balconies above us were hung with laundry fluttering in the breeze—a little slice of everyday life amid all the history. From there, it’s just a short walk to the Roman Temple. Those columns have stood for two thousand years; you can see bits of moss growing in the cracks if you look close enough.

The Cathedral is impossible to miss—its towers rise above everything else in town. Climbing up to the roof was worth every step; you get this wide-open view across red-tiled rooftops and out toward the plains. Our guide pointed out how you can spot Spain on a clear day (it wasn’t quite clear enough for us). Before heading back to Lisbon, we had time for a quick pastel de nata at a tiny bakery tucked behind the main square—still warm from the oven.
