Summary

Walk Évora’s old streets, see the Chapel of Bones, then touch ancient stones outside town

You’ll walk Évora’s winding streets with a local guide, step quietly through the Chapel of Bones, enjoy lunch in town, and end your day among mysterious Neolithic stones at Almendres Cromlech. With hotel pickup and drop-off included, you’ll have space to notice small details — like cool wind on cathedral rooftops or sunlight on ancient rock.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how the light changed as we crossed the 25th of April Bridge out of Lisbon — everything got softer, kind of golden. Our guide, Joana, handed out bottled water and pointed at little villages tucked between olive trees. She told us stories about Évora before we even saw it. I remember thinking: I had no idea Portugal looked like this outside the city. There was this faint smell of eucalyptus when we stepped out in Évora — or maybe it was just my imagination mixing with the heat.

We walked straight into these narrow cobbled lanes that felt older than anything back home. Joana laughed when I tried to say “Capela dos Ossos” (I totally butchered it) and led us inside the Chapel of Bones. It’s… strange in there. Quiet, but not in a scary way — more like respectful. The walls are lined with real bones, skulls stacked up neatly. I caught myself whispering without meaning to. After that, we climbed up to the cathedral roof for a view over tiled rooftops and endless fields. The wind up there felt good after all those stone corridors.

Lunch was on our own — I ended up at a tiny place where an old man poured me vinho tinto and recommended something with black pork (can’t remember the name). The food came out sizzling and salty, perfect after walking so much. Then we drove out to Almendres Cromlech, which honestly surprised me. The stones just stand there in a circle under cork oaks, older than Stonehenge apparently. Joana explained how they line up with the solstice; I mostly just stood there touching one stone and thinking about time — you know?

The ride back to Lisbon was quiet except for someone snoring softly behind me (not naming names). Crossing back over the bridge at dusk, the city lights looked different somehow — maybe it was just me feeling changed after seeing all that history packed into one day trip from Lisbon to Évora.
