The experience

You leave Lisbon in a private car (pickup happens at your hotel or the port), and the drive south takes you out of the city and into the Algarve landscape. The road opens up. After a couple of hours you arrive in Albufeira, the main hub of the region, and your guide walks you through the town to show you where things are: the restaurants, the beaches, the rhythm of the place. It's not a long stop, just enough to get your bearings before heading to the coast.

The real pull is the boat. At Carvoeiro beach you board a small cruise that takes you into the sea caves: the kind of limestone grottos you can't see from land. The Benagil Cave is the main event: a cathedral-sized cavern with a natural opening in the roof and a beach inside it. The boat navigates right in, and you float under the arch, watching the light hit the stone. After the caves you drive to Lagos, where the beaches are different: wider, sandier, backed by those tall ochre cliffs everyone photographs.
