The Experience

“You can’t rush the sea,” our driver João said as we pulled away from Lisbon before sunrise, his voice half-lost in the hum of the highway. I remember thinking he was just talking about traffic, but hours later—after winding through sleepy villages and watching the land turn sandy and bright—I got it. There’s something about arriving in the Algarve that makes you slow down without even noticing. The air felt heavier with salt, and even my phone seemed to give up trying to ping me.

The first real stop was Benagil Cave. I’d seen photos, but nothing really prepares you for that light pouring through the ceiling—it’s like someone punched a perfect hole in the rock just to let the sun in. Our guide Ana handed me a life jacket and grinned, “Don’t drop your camera!” (I almost did.) Inside the cave it smelled faintly of seaweed and sunscreen; voices echoed weirdly off the stone. I tried to pronounce ‘Benagil’ right—Ana laughed at my accent but promised I was close enough.

After that, Marinha Beach and Algar Seco kind of blurred together in my memory—a lot of gold cliffs and wind-whipped hair, sand sticking everywhere (still found some in my shoes later). We wandered along wooden boardwalks above crashing waves, João pointing out little caves he used to swim in as a kid. Lunch wasn’t included but Ana knew exactly where to go—tiny plates of grilled sardines at a beach shack where nobody spoke English but everyone smiled anyway.

Carvoeiro felt like an old postcard: fishing boats bobbing, kids chasing each other barefoot across hot sand. Praia da Rocha was bigger than I expected—loud with families and gulls fighting over chips. On the drive back north I was sunburned and tired in that good way you only get after being outside all day.
