Summary

Beginner canyoning adventure in Madeira’s wild Ribeira das Cales

You’ll start your canyoning day near Pico do Areeiro with a local guide who knows every turn of Ribeira das Cales. Expect cool mountain air, six unique waterfalls to rappel or jump, and a final 15-meter descent that leaves your heart pounding—in a good way. All gear is provided along with GoPro photos and snacks. You’ll leave feeling braver than when you arrived.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“You don’t need to be brave—just curious,” Tiago grinned as he handed me the wetsuit, his accent soft but his eyes sharp. I wasn’t sure if he was joking or just being nice to us beginners. The air up near Pico do Areeiro was cooler than I expected for Madeira—sort of piney and damp, almost like early morning after rain. Pulling on the thick suit felt awkward at first; I could hear someone behind me laughing about their boots squeaking on the rocks. It made me relax a bit.

The first waterfall didn’t look that high until I was right above it. My heart did that thing where it skips and then thuds—Tiago showed us how to lean back into the harness, “like you’re sitting in a chair that trusts you.” The water smelled fresh, almost sweet. We slid down mossy rock into a pool so clear I could see my toes wriggling inside the boots. There were six waterfalls total on this canyoning experience in Ribeira das Cales, each one different—some gentle slides, others more vertical drops where you had to trust your grip and not overthink it (which I did anyway).

I still remember the way everyone cheered when Ana finally jumped from the third ledge—she’d been nervous since the van ride up from Funchal Ecological Park. Tiago clapped her on the back and said something in Portuguese that made her laugh so hard she lost her balance for a second. The last abseil was 15 meters (or maybe it just felt that long)—the rope was rough under my gloves but somehow comforting too. By then my legs were shaky but I didn’t care; I think we all felt a little braver than when we started.

Afterwards, we sat by the riverbank peeling off wetsuits with numb fingers, sipping water and eating snacks Tiago pulled from his backpack. Someone tried to teach me how to say “waterfall” in Portuguese—I butchered it completely and got an eye roll from one of the guides (all good-natured). The whole thing took about three hours but time got weird out there—I kept thinking about how green everything was and how quiet except for water echoing off stone. It’s not something you can really explain until you’ve done it yourself.
