Jeep Safari West Madeira: Cabo Girão, Fanal & Porto Moniz
A 4x4 climbs where regular roads don't, into the Laurissilva forest and up to the Paul da Serra plateau.
A full-day jeep safari through western Madeira with a live guide in English or Portuguese, starting at Cabo Girão and ending at Porto Moniz, includes pickup from Funchal and an air-conditioned vehicle. The route runs off-road through the Laurissilva forest, stops at Fanal's centuries-old trees, and breaks for lunch and optional swimming at Porto Moniz's natural pools; the 589-meter Cabo Girão viewpoint opens the day.

The Experience
Seven to eight hours means the route covers ground most visitors never reach without a 4x4. The day starts at Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest viewpoints at 589 meters, then drops into the rural paths around Lugar de Baixo where traditional agricultural roads give way to off-road tracks through the Laurissilva forest. A stop at a local bar offers Poncha, Madeira's traditional drink, before the climb toward the mountains and Fanal, where you walk among centuries-old trees and observe the forest's flora and fauna without the crowds of the main tourist routes.
Porto Moniz arrives mid-afternoon as the main break. Lunch at a local restaurant is your own choice, but the natural pools carved into the black rock are there if you want to swim. The return route passes through the north coast's quieter villages — Ribeira da Janela, Ribeira Funda, Seixal — where waterfalls drop to black sand beaches and the Madeiran landscape shows itself without the polish of the south. The black sand beach at Seixal and a stop in São Vicente round out the cultural side before the drive back to Funchal.
Pickup and drop-off from your Funchal hotel means no rental car, no navigation, no guessing which tracks are passable. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English or Portuguese, so the commentary flows in your language. Children from age 2 travel, though pregnant travelers are not advised for the terrain and duration.

What is Cabo Girão and why does the tour start there?
Cabo Girão is one of Europe's highest viewpoints at 589 meters, and the tour opens there to frame the scale of the landscape before dropping into the rural paths and forest below.
Can I swim at Porto Moniz, and is it included?
Porto Moniz has natural pools carved into the rock where you can swim if you choose to. Swimming is optional and the pools are free to use; lunch at the local restaurant is your own cost.
What makes the Laurissilva forest stop different from hiking it on foot?
The 4x4 takes you off-road through the forest on tracks regular vehicles cannot reach, and the route climbs to the Paul da Serra plateau, combining forest and mountain views in one day without the walking distance.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?
Pickup and drop-off from your Funchal hotel are included, so you do not need a rental car or directions to meet the jeep.
How much of the day is driving versus stops?
The seven to eight hours includes multiple stops — Cabo Girão viewpoint, the Poncha bar, Fanal forest, Porto Moniz for lunch and swimming, and the black sand beach at Seixal — so the pace alternates between driving and exploring on foot.
