I’ll be honest—I thought this would just be a fancy way to get from Lisbon to Porto. But the first stop in Óbidos changed my mind. The air smelled like stone and cherry liqueur (Ginja), and our guide João handed us tiny chocolate cups filled with it. I probably dripped half of mine on my shirt but nobody cared—everyone was too busy peeking into flowered windows or running their hands along the old castle walls. The streets were so narrow we had to walk single file sometimes, which made us laugh when a local woman squeezed past carrying bread under her arm.

By Nazaré the weather had shifted—windier, saltier. João pointed out the cliffs where surfers chase those monster waves (I can’t even imagine). We watched a fisherman mending nets with his son while gulls screamed overhead. Someone in our group tried to say “Nazaré” properly and got teased by a shopkeeper—it broke the ice though. Then came Fátima, which was quieter than I expected; even if you’re not religious, there’s something about all those candles flickering in the afternoon light that just makes you slow down.

Lunch was somewhere between Fátima and Coimbra—I lost track of time because we were swapping stories with João about his university days. Coimbra itself was all golden stone and students in black capes (yes, really). I still think about that view from the top—the river curling away under low clouds. Aveiro surprised me; I didn’t expect canals or those wild striped houses. We tried ovos moles (sweet egg pastries) on a bench by the water before heading north again. And then suddenly we were in Porto, tired but kind of wishing the road kept going.
