Lisbon’s street art stories from a tuk tuk in Graça and Mouraria

The Experience
We’d barely squeezed into the little electric tuk tuk when our guide, João, grinned and pointed at a wall I’d walked past three times this week without noticing. “That’s Sophia,” he said, nodding at the huge portrait of the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen in Graça. There was something about the way her eyes watched over the street—soft but kind of fierce too. The air smelled like fresh laundry from somewhere above, and João told us how she used to live nearby. I tried to say her name right; he laughed and corrected me gently.
The tuk tuk hummed up narrow streets (honestly, I still don’t know how João managed those corners), stopping every so often for us to hop out and look closer. In Mouraria, we found Vhils’ carved faces—one was Amália Rodrigues, her features chipped right into old stone. There were layers of city noise: a radio playing fado from a window, someone arguing about football in Portuguese, spray paint still faint on the breeze. At one point we stopped by Bordalo II’s panda—made from scraps and metal bits—João explained it was about sustainability. I hadn’t expected street art to feel so… alive? Like you could almost hear the artists arguing or laughing as they worked.
Somewhere near Portas do Sol viewpoint, we ducked under an archway painted with Lisbon’s whole tangled history—kings and sailors and revolutionaries all crammed together in comic-book colors. The view there made me stop talking for once; sunlight on red rooftops, all those murals tucked between them. I’m still thinking about that silence now.
