The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the tuk-tuk’s engine—a kind of cheerful putter that bounced off Lisbon’s narrow walls. Our guide, Joana, waved us in with a grin and we squeezed into the back (I mean, it’s not luxury seating but honestly that made it funnier). Before I could even get my bearings, we were weaving through Alfama. Tiles everywhere, laundry flapping above. Then Joana pointed at a wall—Vhils’ carved face just staring out from the stone. It looked almost sad in the morning light. I tried to snap a photo but ended up mostly catching my own reflection in the window.

We zipped past Campo de Santa Clara where André Saraiva’s mural stretches forever—blue and white tiles for days. I didn’t expect to care about tiles but there’s something hypnotic about 53,000 of them lined up like that. At one stop, Joana told us how some locals still argue about whether graffiti is art or vandalism here. She shrugged and said “it depends on who you ask,” which felt pretty Lisbon somehow. The tuk-tuk rattled over cobbles as we headed toward LX Factory—suddenly there was this huge bee by Bordalo II, all metal scraps and plastic lids, bigger than any bee should be. Someone nearby was roasting chestnuts; the smell mixed with exhaust and sea air.

I kept thinking I’d seen every mural already but then we’d turn down another alley or pass an abandoned building covered in wild colors by Os Gémeos or Blu—some names I’d never heard before this day trip through Lisbon street art. At one point Joana stopped to chat with an older man selling books at Feira da Ladra; she switched from English to Portuguese so fast I barely caught a word. He laughed when she pointed at a painted wall behind him—maybe he sees it every day and doesn’t even notice anymore.

By the end my phone battery was nearly dead from photos (and okay, maybe too many videos of the tuk-tuk bouncing around). The city felt different after seeing it through these murals—a bit messier, way more alive. Sometimes I still picture that carved face from Alfama when I think about Lisbon at night.
