Clams, prego, and garum: what Lisbon's everyday restaurants still cook

A five-hour afternoon food tour through Lisbon's Mouraria, Graça and Santa Clara neighborhoods, stopping at working tascas, modern tabernas and a 16th-century monastery to taste daily specials, fresh seafood, house-made condiments and local wines. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the route also passes through Feira da Ladra flea market. An English-speaking guide leads the group through the stops; moderate fitness helps with the uphill sections.

5h

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Lisbon's historic neighborhoods and tastes

  • Visit Catholic church for first bite
  • Enjoy hidden bite around park
  • Explore Martim Moniz Square and taste
  • Go uphill to Graça Viewpoint for bite

The Experience

The tour starts at a decades-old tasca where you'll taste the daily specials—the kind of place where locals still eat lunch. From there you climb toward Graça Viewpoint, stopping at a modern taberna that reimagines Portugal's fish and seafood traditions. Along the way you'll taste fresh clams, a classic prego steak sandwich, and house-made piripiri. The guide will explain garum, a fish-based condiment with roots dating back to Roman times, and you'll taste it too.

The route passes through Martim Moniz Square and pauses at a former 16th-century monastery for something sweet. You'll taste local wines as you move through the neighborhoods, then finish at a historic palace with chilled muscatel and views toward São Jorge Castle as the light changes. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the afternoon also includes time at Feira da Ladra, Lisbon's flea market, so the day holds both food and the street life around it.

Bottled water and snacks are included. The neighborhoods have steep sections, so the operator notes you'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Public transportation options are nearby if you need a break.
