“He always played with his eyes half-closed, like he was dreaming,” our host said as she handed me a glass of honeyed mead. The room itself wasn’t big, maybe sixty seats if you squeezed in. You could hear people shifting in their chairs, coats brushing against each other. Our pianist walked in quietly (I missed his name — too busy watching his hands), sat at the Kawai grand piano, and just started playing without much fuss. No intermission, no dramatic pause. The first notes were softer than I expected, almost like someone speaking low so you’d lean in. For forty-five minutes it was just Chopin — I mean really just him — echoing off those old gallery walls where he once studied and played as a kid. At one point I caught myself holding my breath during a nocturne; it felt like even the street noise outside had faded away.
