The experience

The tour starts at your hotel, where a driver meets you in the lobby and drives you through Lima in a private, air-conditioned vehicle. The 30-minute ride takes you to Marcahuasi first, then into Miraflores: the upscale residential district south of downtown with hotels, restaurants and shops that draws most of Lima's visitors. From there you move into San Isidro, the wealthy neighbourhood officially created in 1931, which sits on the west side of the city with a few metres of coastline.

The core of the day is the Historic Centre of Lima, the capital's colonial heart spread across the districts of Lima and Rímac in the Rímac Valley. You walk through the Monumental Zone and stop at the Church and Convent of Saint Francis, which sits on the first block of Abancay Avenue between Ancash and Lampa streets. Entry to the catacombs beneath the convent is included. The Larco Museum (which holds objects from the Inca, Moche, Nazca and Chimu civilizations) is also on the itinerary. You can add the ticket at checkout if you want to go inside, or skip it and move on.

After the guided stops, you get two hours of free time to walk where you want, and your guide drops you at a convenient spot to do it. The driver then takes you back to your hotel. The whole day runs eight hours, though traffic, special events and other circumstances beyond the operator's control can shift the timing. How much free time you actually get depends on how quickly the guided stops finish.
