The experience

The boat leaves Iquitos heading upriver to the lodge, where the real work starts: you'll fish for piranhas in the river, climb into the canopy on ropes and lianas, and move through the jungle on foot at different hours to catch the animals when they're active. The guide leads the exploration and handles the boat, so you focus on what you came to do. Breakfast, lunch and dinner happen at the lodge between sessions, and you sleep there overnight.

A 2-day trip means you get the jungle twice over: the dawn chorus and the night sounds, the daytime heat and the cooler hours after dark. The lodge sits deep enough that the animals don't flee at the sound of an engine, and the rhythm of the place (up before light, out on the water, back for food, out again) is what makes the wildlife watching work. You're not watching from a distance. You're moving through their space on foot and by boat.

Moderate fitness matters here because you'll be climbing, walking uneven ground, and moving in and out of a boat multiple times across two days. The jungle is humid and the insects are real, but the lodge provides shelter and the guide knows how to move safely through it. Infants can come if they sit on an adult's lap. Specialized seats are available for younger children.

What exactly do you do when you're fishing for piranhas in the Amazon?

You fish from the boat or the riverbank using a line and bait, with the guide showing you where to cast and how to handle the catch. Piranhas are fast strikers and strong fighters, so the moment you hook one is the whole point. You'll feel the pull and land it yourself.

How much of the two days is actually spent in the jungle versus at the lodge?

Do you need to be an experienced climber to hang from the lianas?
