The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and a transfer to Bellavista Nanay port, where you board a typical Amazon boat for the three-day journey. On day one, you travel downriver watching for gray and pink dolphins, then visit the Kukama tribe to learn their relationship with the jungle and its medicinal plants. A stop at Monkey Island lets you feed and photograph monkeys in their natural habitat before you arrive at the lodge for lunch and a 30-minute swim in the Amazon, including a black mud bath. The evening brings an Amazon sunset (weather permitting) and a night walk through the jungle to spot insects, tarantulas, frogs, and nocturnal birds.

Day two centers on wildlife and local knowledge. You start with an Amazon sunrise and bird watching, then visit the Wildlife Rescue Center to see sloths, macaws, toucans, boa constrictors, and turtles being cared for before release. At the Amazonian Trapiche, you taste artisanal macerates (camu camu, seven roots, and ginger) each with specific health properties. After lunch, a piranha fishing lesson teaches you the subsistence techniques jungle inhabitants use, and the evening canoe trip searches for caimans, which the guide releases safely back into the water.

The final day moves deeper into remote territory. A botanical walk introduces the main medicinal plants, then a peque peque boat takes you up the Yanayacu River to the Giant Tree Trail, where you reach the Lupuna tree to make a wish. The Yaguas tribe visit lets you learn ancestral customs, see traditional palm-fiber clothing, and try the pucuna (blowgun) used for centuries to hunt. After a buffet lunch at the lodge, you return to Iquitos by boat, arriving at Plaza de Armas around 5:30pm.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What's the difference between the Kukama and Yaguas tribes I'll meet on this tour?

The Kukama tribe, visited on day one, are guardians of the region's biodiversity and have passed down oral traditions explaining their origin and relationship with nature through stories and myths. The Yaguas tribe, visited on day three, are descendants of people first encountered by Francisco de Orellana during his 1541 Amazon exploration. They wear traditional attire made from palm fibers and use the pucuna (blowgun) for hunting, a skill you can test yourself.

Will I actually swim in the Amazon River?

Yes, on day one after lunch you have a 30-minute swim in the Amazon River on its beaches, including a black mud bath known as a "flowering bath." The river water is safe for swimming at the designated lodge area.

How does the piranha fishing work on day two?

The guide teaches you local subsistence fishing techniques using the same materials jungle inhabitants use, so you learn the traditional method before attempting to catch piranhas or other species. It's an artisanal fishing tour, not a commercial one.

What time does the tour end, and how do I get back to my hotel?

The boat returns to Iquitos and arrives at Plaza de Armas around 5:30pm on day three. Hotel transfer back from the port is available as an option at checkout.

What animals will I see, and where?

Pink and gray dolphins appear during river travel (pink dolphins are seasonal). Monkey Island on day one has multiple monkey species you can feed and photograph. Day two includes the Wildlife Rescue Center with sloths, macaws, toucans, boa constrictors, and turtles. Night canoeing on day two searches for caimans. The night jungle walk on day one may reveal insects, tarantulas, frogs, scorpions, and nocturnal birds.

Is the lodge comfortable, and what's included for meals?

You stay two nights at a jungle lodge with basic Amazon camp accommodations. All meals are included: typical jungle dishes for lunch and dinner each day, plus breakfast at the lodge on days two and three. Vegetarian options are available if you request them in advance.
