Master the fundamentals and ride the wind in one afternoon

A two-hour kiteboarding lesson at Panama Kite Center in Punta Chame teaches you to kitesurf in flat water with certified instructors and all equipment provided. The lesson follows a proven progression: wind theory and beach basics, kite setup, safety and self-rescue, kite control, bodydrag, standing up, and riding. One-on-one instruction with radio communication keeps you connected to your instructor throughout. Most students need 8 to 10 hours total to become independent; blocks of two hours are the most efficient pace.

The Experience

The lesson starts with wind theory and beach basics before you touch the kite, then moves through equipment setup and safety procedures on the sand. Your instructor communicates with you by radio helmet system so you can hear corrections and guidance the moment you need them. The flat-water lagoon at Punta Chame sits right in front of the center, which means you're learning without waves or currents from your first hour in the water.

The progression builds in steps: kite control and relaunch on the beach, bodydrag in the shallows, then standing up and riding. Two-hour blocks are structured to be the most efficient learning pace, and you can do up to four hours in a single day if you want to push further. The goal is to get you to the point where you can kite independently and rent or buy your own equipment afterward.

All equipment is included: the kite, bar, harness, board, and helmet. The center is multilingual, with instructors teaching in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and one additional language. The beach club also welcomes friends and family who want to spend the day there, and accommodation options are available if you want to stay longer in Punta Chame.

Top questions

What's the best time of year to take a kiteboarding lesson in Panama?

December through May brings constant winds to Punta Chame, making it the ideal season for learning. The flat-water lagoon at the center stays calm year-round, but the wind consistency during these months is what makes progression fastest.

Do I need any experience before booking a kiteboarding lesson?

No experience is required. The lesson teaches you from the ground up, starting with wind theory and beach basics before you ever touch the water. You need to be at least 12 years old and have a moderate level of physical fitness.

What makes Punta Chame a good place to learn kiteboarding?

Punta Chame has seven kilometers of beach and a flat-water lagoon right in front of the center, which means less waves and no currents. This setup lets you focus on learning the fundamentals without fighting the water, and you can start riding in the water from your first hour.

How long does it usually take to become an independent kiteboarder?

Most students need 8 to 10 hours of instruction to become independent and ready to kite alone. Two-hour lessons are the most efficient block, so you could reach that goal in four to five sessions, or combine longer days if you prefer.

Is the lesson one-on-one, or will I be in a group?

The center teaches one-on-one, so your instructor focuses entirely on you and your progress. Radio communication on your helmet keeps you connected throughout the lesson.
