Rappel waterfalls and slide canyon rock on a morning adventure

Canyoning in Macho de Monte Canyon, Panama involves abseiling down waterfalls, sliding natural chutes and jumping into pools with certified guides who provide all equipment. The activity runs roughly three and a half hours and includes a 15-minute walk to the first waterfall, a natural slide, a guided descent with ropes, and a choice to jump or abseil a 7-meter drop. Guides speak English and Spanish. Children from age 12 are welcome. The experience runs December through April.

The experience

You walk 15 minutes into the canyon to reach the first waterfall, a 4-meter drop where you slide down natural rock. From there the route follows the canyon floor to a slope you descend with guide assistance and ropes, building toward the main event: a 7-meter waterfall where you can either jump into the pool or abseil down to practice the technique safely. Certified guides with years of canyoning experience manage the ropes and your harness at each stage.

All equipment comes with you: rope, harness, helmet and life-saving vest are included, so you arrive ready to move. The guides speak English and Spanish, and the whole circuit is designed to teach basic abseiling in a real canyon setting rather than on a practice wall. Snacks and fresh fruit are provided during the activity.

The canyon only opens December through April, when water levels and conditions suit the route. The roughly three-and-a-half-hour timeframe covers the walk, all three waterfall sections and the return, leaving most of the day free for other plans in Panama.

What’s included

  • Complete canyoning equipment including rope, harness, helmet and life-saving vest.
