The Experience

The first thing I remember is our guide, Bilal, waving us over at the museum steps—he had this easy smile that made it feel like we’d met before. He pointed out the Zamzama Gun right away (“Kim’s cannon!” he grinned), and then somehow we were talking about Kipling and cricket with an old man who’d just come to feed the pigeons. The air smelled faintly of diesel and cardamom from a chai stall nearby. I didn’t expect to start a day trip in Lahore swapping stories with strangers but that’s how it goes here.

We zigzagged through traffic toward Minar-e-Pakistan—Bilal joked about Lahore drivers (“they have their own laws”)—and then onto the Lahore Fort. The Mirror Palace was cooler than I thought (literally cold inside, which felt good). The main keyword for me was “textures”: smooth marble underfoot, rough red sandstone walls, even the sticky sweet taste of a jalaibi someone pressed into my hand near the mosque. At Badshahi Mosque, Bilal showed us where Allama Iqbal is buried; he recited a line of poetry in Urdu and I tried to repeat it. Li laughed when I butchered it—can’t win ‘em all.

Old Town was chaos in the best way. Dehli Gate thrummed with motorbikes and shouts from spice sellers; Shahi Hamam’s faded tiles were cool under my palm. We passed a wedding procession (so much gold fabric!) and ducked into Wazir Khan Mosque just as the call to prayer echoed off the walls. There’s this moment where you just stand still while everything moves around you—I still think about that view through Elbow Street, sunlight catching on copper pots.

By late afternoon we hit Liberty Market (I bought socks with peacocks on them) and then food street for rooftop chai—the city below looked soft and hazy. But honestly? The Wagah Border ceremony was wild: drums, stomping boots, everyone shouting across invisible lines. It wasn’t what I expected—more like theater than military—but people cheered together anyway. On the drive back Bilal asked what surprised us most; nobody really answered right away.
