The experience

You start in Multan on day one, where your accredited guide meets you and walks through the city's layered history: the Tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin Zakaria Multani, the British-era Fort Kohna Qasim, and Damdma, a high point overlooking the city. The guide then takes you to four more Sufi shrines: Shah Shams Sabzwari, Shah Yusaf Gardezi (where his lion and snake are buried at the entrance), Shah Ali Akbar, and Ahmad Saerd Shah Kazmi, each with its own story woven into Multan's identity as a city of saints. After lunch, you move into Old Town Multan, walking through the gates and bazaars, visiting the Jain Temple and the Hussain Agahi marketplace with its carved wooden balconies. The guide gives you a gift of Sohan Halva, the city's signature sweet.

Day two takes you 80 to 100 minutes north to Uch Sharif, a town founded by Alexander the Great, where you visit the Tomb of Jalal-ud-din Surkh Posh Bukhari, who brought Islam to the region, and the Tomb of Bibi Jawindi. You also see the graves of Makhdoom Jahanian Jahan Gashat, known as the greatest traveler of the medieval world. From there you drive to Bahawalpur, the city of palaces and Nawabs, where you explore Fareed Gate, the old bazaars, and the Shahi Mosque before an overnight stay.

Day three heads into the Cholistan Desert to Derawar Fort, built in the 9th century by Raja Jajja Bhatti and rebuilt in 1733 by the Abbasi family. You visit the Royal Mosque and take a camel safari to the Royal Graveyard, where graves are said to belong to companions of the Prophet Muhammad. On the return to Bahawalpur, you pass the palaces of the Nawabs (Sadiq Garh and Noor Mahal), and if the museum is open, you stop there. Before heading back to Multan in the evening, you visit a blue pottery workshop where artisans hand-paint earthen pots.
