The experience

The day starts in Ibra, a village built over a thousand years ago from mud and limestone. You walk through streets where people still live, seeing how the construction has held. From there the route heads into Wahiba Sands, a desert spanning 12,500 square kilometers across Oman's Eastern Region. The landscape is named for the Bani Wahiba tribe, and stretches 180 kilometers north to south and 80 kilometers east to west.

Once in the desert, you board a 4x4 for dune bashing: the vehicle climbs and descends the sand slopes while your guide drives. You climb one of the high dunes to watch the sunset, then return to a camp where a buffet dinner waits. The entire outing, including transport time from your hotel, runs six to seven hours.

Your guide speaks English and travels with you throughout. Hotel, airport or port pickup is included, along with an air-conditioned 4x4, bottled water, and the dinner.
