The experience
Day one settles you at the W Muscat, a five-star beachfront hotel where you'll stay for all three nights. Your guide meets you at Muscat International Airport with a sign bearing your name and drives you to the hotel. On day two, an eight-hour guided tour covers the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (a structure that opened in 2001 and holds 20,000 people), then moves through the Royal Opera House, Al-Qurm Beach, and into the Muttrah Souq, where vendors sell dates, silver, gold, and frankincense. You'll eat traditional Omani food at Bait Al Luban restaurant, then board a two-hour sunset dhow cruise on a traditional wooden boat, a shared experience with other travelers.
Day three takes you east to Wadi Shab, an eight-hour adventure that starts with a boat crossing of the river, then a hike through farms backed by mountains. The trail narrows between rocks and leads to a waterfall cave where you swim through to reach it. The same day includes the Bimmah sinkhole, a 20-meter-deep natural depression filled with water, and White Beach nearby. Lunch at a local restaurant is optional. On the final day, your guide drives you to Muscat International Airport based on your departure time.
The tour runs in a 4WD Mitsubishi Pajero or similar vehicle, with water provided throughout. Nizwa Souq on day four opens at the date market, then branches into Omani sweets, food vendors, and silver and souvenir shops. Nizwa Fort, built by Imam Sultan bin Saif Yarub, stands as a fortified compound that once sheltered the Imam, soldiers, weapons and supplies. From there, you move into Jabal Akhdar's old villages (Al Ain and Wadi Bani Habib), where agricultural terraces climb the mountainside and local shops sell mountain products. The guide is experienced and speaks English. The tour is designed to welcome small groups and can be booked for four people across two rooms at a discounted rate.
