The Experience

The tour starts with a drive to Kokarsteinen, a stone shelter where travelers once stopped for rest or food in the old days. From there the route moves toward a viewpoint overlooking the fjord, passing the Rose Church built in 1789 and the salmon farms of Stranda across the water. The guide points out the mountain farm Skrednakken, where Norway's Queen Sonja visited, and explains the geography of the fjords visible from the overlook.

Gudbrandsjuvet is the gorge stop—a river that flows between cracks in the mountain and drops through potholes before running under a bridge. Glass and rust-corroded iron platforms and walkways let you stand over the water and see the force of it. A cafeteria sits at the base. The next stop is Krikebrua, where you walk 3 to 4 minutes across the road to see an 1891 bridge built entirely of stacked rocks, with a waterfall and river above it. Free toilets and benches are there for rest.

Trollstigen ViewPoints is the main stop. Two viewpoints are available—one a 5-minute walk from the bus, the other 10 minutes—both on concrete paths with safety fencing. A souvenir shop, cafeteria with hot meals, and free toilets are on-site. On the drive down from the pass, you stop for photos after Stigfoss waterfall. The tour ends at Trollstigen Gjestegård, which has a large souvenir shop, cafeteria, and restrooms.
