The experience
The tour starts at Mount Aksla, where the city spreads below you across islands and fjords. From there, the guide takes you to Giske Church on its own island: a 12th-century marble church built as a private chapel for a powerful Norwegian family, still in use today. The route then crosses through a unique tunnel to reach Alnes, an isolated fishing village with its iconic lighthouse standing against the Atlantic.
At the Sunnmøre Open-Air Museum, you walk through buildings that survived or were rebuilt after the great fire of 1904: farmhouses, cow sheds, boathouses, fishermen's shacks, and old schools dating back to the Middle Ages. The museum shows how people actually lived and worked on the farms and at sea. Atlantic Sea Park, elected the best aquarium in the Nordic countries, comes next. It holds cold-water fish, penguins, and otters, and you can feed and interact with some of the animals.
The tour ends driving through central Alesund, where Art Nouveau facades line the streets. You'll see where the Guinness-recorded bonfire burns on the island, and if your ship is docked, the guide will point it out. Bottled water and snacks come with the tour. The guide travels with you the whole way and can answer questions about what you're seeing.
