The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Ålesund hotel and a drive south through Stranda and the Sykkylven mountain region to Hellesylt, where you board a ferry for the one-hour crossing to Geiranger. The audioguide plays in English, German, French or Norwegian, naming the waterfalls and explaining how the fjord was carved. Lunch and snacks are sold on board. Once ashore in Geiranger village, there is a short stop before the route continues uphill.

From Geiranger, the car climbs to Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, where the village appears far below against the fjord's deep blue water. The route then follows the Eagle Road (a series of tight switchbacks carved into the mountainside) down to Eidsdal, where a second ferry crosses to Linge. The return journey to Ålesund traces the fjord's western edge, passing the snow-covered peaks and waterfalls that line the water.

An air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water and snacks are included. The tour is private, so the pace and stops are yours to set within the day's framework. Specialized infant seats are available if you are traveling with small children.
