The experience
You board a minibus at the cruise pier and drive through Alesund's distinctive Art Nouveau streets while your guide explains how the city rebuilt itself after the Great Fire of 1904. The first stop is Sunnmore Museum, an open-air collection of traditional wooden buildings dating from the 16th to 20th century, moved here to preserve the region's architectural heritage. You walk among grass-roofed timber houses and see historic fishing boats that anchor the Sunnmore coast's maritime story.
The second stop takes you to Mount Aksla, where the panoramic view spreads the entire coloured town below: surrounded by islands, mountains, and the Atlantic. On clear days the Sunnmore Alps appear in the distance. This is where most photographs happen. If the cafe is open, you can buy coffee or ice cream and get free access to the bathroom and roof seating. From Aksla you drive back down through the city streets to Molja Lighthouse, built in 1858 to guide fishing boats into the harbour. The lighthouse now stands as a symbol of Alesund's maritime heritage and is famous for housing one of the world's smallest hotels.
The tour runs three hours total, timed so you return to the cruise pier before your ship departs. The minibus holds a maximum of 16 passengers and has panoramic windows. Your guide speaks English and drives. All tolls, fuel surcharges, taxes and fees are included in the price.
