The Experience

There's something about the pull of a place you've only heard about in stories. The Viking Market at Njardarheimr opens just two months a year — July and August — and when it does, local artisans and Viking craftspeople from across Europe set up in Gudvangen, a small village tucked under Norway's tallest waterfall, Kjelfossen. You leave Bergen in the morning and spend the next nine to ten hours moving through Western Norway's landscape: past the Tvindefossen waterfall (110 meters of white water dropping near Voss), through valleys that look almost unreal in their tidiness, and finally down to the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site that sits between steep mountains and water so still it reflects everything above it.

Your driver is both driver and guide, which means the stops aren't rushed. You pull over at Stalheim Hotel, perched 373 meters above the Nærøydalen valley, where the view alone justifies the detour — the hotel's been there since 1647, and the terrace still holds that same vantage point. Then you arrive in Gudvangen for lunch (you choose where — the local hotel restaurant or inside the Viking Village itself), and after eating, you have time to walk through Njardarheimr. The village offers two ways to experience it: a regular entrance with a scheduled group tour led by a local guide, or a private option where a Viking guide stays with your party for a full hour, moving at your pace. Either way, you see the crafts, the archery and axe-throwing setups, and you get to browse the market itself — the real reason people come. The goods are genuine: leather work, Viking-inspired jewelry, hand-forged items, things you won't find in Bergen's shops.

On the drive back, you pass through Voss again, and there's an option to ride the Voss Gondol cable car up Mount Hangur (though that costs extra and eats into your return time). The tour ends back in Bergen around 6pm. Because it's private — just you and your group with one driver-guide — you can ask to stop wherever you want for photos or just to stand in the quiet and listen to the water. That flexibility is what separates this from a bus tour where everyone gets fifteen minutes at each spot.
