The experience
The day starts with a drive south from Bergen along the fjord, stopping first at Bjørkheim Cafe for 15 minutes to see the water from above, then at Fossen Bratte: a 79-meter waterfall that drops in a single cascade. The minibus then takes you to Steinsdalsfossen near Norheimsund, where a path runs behind the 50-meter drop so you can stand between the rock face and the water without getting wet. This is one of Norway's most visited waterfalls, and a small café sits just beyond the stone arch bridge that leads to it. You'll have less than half an hour here before moving on to Norheimsund itself, a town on the fjord with restaurants and shops where most travelers stop for lunch.
After Norheimsund, the route follows the fjord for 40 minutes to Kvandal, where you board the first ferry at 2 p.m. The crossing to Utne takes 20 minutes. The upper deck offers views and photo stops. Utne is a small village with traditional wooden houses and a 300-year-old hotel, and the minibus pauses there before continuing along road 550 toward Jondal: a 35-minute drive through orchards that line the fjord, with photo stops as weather allows. A second ferry then crosses the main arm of the fjord from Jondal to Tørvikbygd in about 20 minutes, after which the route heads directly back to Bergen, arriving around 6 p.m.
The minibus is air-conditioned and seats a small group. Bathrooms and kiosks are available on both ferries and at most stops. The pace is steady but not rushed, with time built in at each waterfall and village to walk, rest or eat.

Most of the journey is by minibus and ferry, so it suits travelers who prefer sitting and watching over hiking or climbing, though the short walks at the waterfalls and villages add variety to the route.
