The Experience

The day starts at 8:30 am with pickup at your Bergen hotel or cruise port, then heads south toward Dale and Voss through the Norwegian countryside. The first stop is Tvindefossen waterfall, where you can step out and photograph the cascade. From there, the route climbs to the Stalheim Hotel, perched on a terrace with views across the Nærøydalen Valley—a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Stalheimskleiva road that gets you there is one of Northern Europe's steepest, winding up a ridge between two waterfalls: Sivlefossen (140 metres) and Stalheimsfossen (126 metres). This section of the road is open May through September only.

After Stalheim, the drive descends into the valley to Gudvangen, an ancient village tucked at the end of the Nærøyfjord. Here you board a passenger ferry for a sightseeing cruise across two fjord branches—the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord—to Flåm. The ferry ride is the water leg of the day, with the narrow fjord walls and hanging waterfalls passing on either side. Once in Flåm, you have free time for lunch at a local restaurant (your own cost) and to wander the souvenir shops, the Flåmsbana railway museum, or a local microbrewery if you want to stay in the village.

Straight after, you board the Flåmsbana railway—one of Norway's most scenic train routes—heading up to Myrdal. The train climbs through canyons and valleys, and stops briefly at Kjøsfossen waterfall for photos. At Myrdal you switch trains for the onward journey to Voss, a town with a medieval church and centuries of Norwegian history visible in its layout and buildings. The final leg is a 1.5-hour drive back to Bergen, arriving at your hotel or cruise port to end the tour.

Top questions

What is the Flåmsbana railway, and why is it worth the ride?

The Flåmsbana is a mountain railway that climbs from Flåm to Myrdal through some of Norway's most dramatic terrain—steep valleys, waterfalls and hairpin turns carved into the mountainside. It is one of the world's steepest standard-gauge railway lines and stops at Kjøsfossen waterfall so passengers can photograph it from the train.

Do I need to arrange the ferry and train tickets myself, or are they included?

The passenger ferry across the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord and the Flåmsbana railway to Myrdal are both included in the main tour option (With cruise & Flamsbana). Your guide handles the boarding; you just show up at the dock and the station.

What happens in Flåm, and how much free time do I get there?

Flåm is a small village at the end of the fjord where the ferry arrives. You have free time to eat lunch at a local restaurant (at your own cost), browse souvenir shops, visit the Flåmsbana railway museum, or check out the local microbrewery. The exact length of free time depends on the ferry schedule and train departure, which your guide will confirm.

Is the Stalheimskleiva road always open, and what makes it special?

The Stalheimskleiva road is open May through September only. It is a 1.5-kilometre stretch that winds up the mountainside at one of Northern Europe's steepest grades, running between two waterfalls—Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen—both visible from the road as you climb.

What if I arrive on a cruise ship—can the tour still pick me up?

Yes. At the time of booking, cruise passengers must provide the ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time. Your driver will coordinate pickup at the cruise port and plan the return to meet your ship's departure.

Is lunch included, and what are the meal options?

Lunch is not included and is at your own expense. In Flåm, you have free time to eat at a local restaurant of your choice. Your guide can recommend options, but you select and pay for your meal.
