  • Watch incandescent lava at sunset
  • Explore volcano museum and fumaroles
  • View old Managua and lake
  • Visit Revolution Plaza and cathedral

The experience

You get picked up from your hotel or the airport and driven to Masaya volcano, about 30 minutes south of Managua. At the Santiago crater, you stand at the rim and watch the orange glow of incandescent lava as the sun sets, turning the sky above it. The guide explains what you're seeing (the raw heat and movement of an active volcano), and you have time to photograph the moment before the light fades. You also visit the fumaroles of el comalito, a smaller crater nearby, and walk through a museum that covers the indigenous people who lived in this region long before Spanish arrival.

After the volcano, the tour moves to Managua's revolution plaza at the Old Cathedral, where the guide shares Nicaraguan history and the country's political past while you take in the architecture. Then you stop at Tiscapa Lagoon Natural Reserve, which overlooks the city and the lake, for a view of old Managua and another chance to absorb the landscape you've traveled through. The whole route is built around what you see and what the guide tells you about it: no rushed stops, just the places that matter.

If you book the night option, you return to the volcano after dark to see the lava glow without the sunset competing for your attention. The choice between the two depends on whether you want the color of the sky or the intensity of the crater alone.

Is this one for you?Book the sunset option if you want the contrast of the lava glow against a changing sky. What exactly will I see when I stand at the Santiago crater?

The Santiago crater is an active volcanic opening where incandescent lava glows orange, especially visible as daylight fades. You stand at the rim and watch the raw glow of the lava itself, and the guide explains the volcanic activity you're witnessing. The sunset tour times your arrival so the sky and the lava glow create the strongest contrast.

How much time do I actually spend at the crater versus traveling?

The crater and museum visit takes about 30 minutes. The full tour runs two to four hours depending on traffic and how long you spend at each stop in Managua: the revolution plaza, the Old Cathedral, and Tiscapa Lagoon.

What's included in the pickup, and where does the tour end?

Hotel or airport pickup and drop-off are included. The driver and guide collect you from your accommodation or the airport, take you through all the stops, and return you to the same place at the end of the tour.
