The experience

Your guide picks you up at your Managua hotel or airport at 10am and drives you to Masaya Volcano National Park. At the crater rim, you stand above active lava and hear it moving inside the volcano. The vantage point lets you photograph the crater and the landscape around it without scrambling or long hikes. The museum at the park explains the volcano's history before you head back down.

From there, the route takes you to Apoyo Lagoon, a crater lake with water so still and clear that kayaking is straightforward even for first-timers. You swim in the lagoon, and if you want to paddle, the kayak sits ready: the water stays calm and shallow enough that you control the pace. A restaurant on the shore serves typical Nicaraguan food at low prices. Drinks and meals are optional and cost extra. Some travelers spend an hour here. Others stay longer.

On the way back to Managua, you pass through Granada's colonial center. The Church of La Merced sits in the main plaza, and you can climb the bell tower for a view of the whole city and Lake Nicaragua.
