The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel or airport and drives you into Granada's colonial center. The walking tour starts with the main cathedral and the network of churches throughout the old city. You'll climb the bell tower of La Merced, which offers the best viewpoint in town for photographs of the whole city spread below. After that, you walk La Calzada street, the most popular thoroughfare, where you can stop for lunch at any of the restaurants along it (lunch is your choice and cost).

Once you reach the waterfront, your boat captain joins the tour and takes you across Lake Nicaragua. You visit Monkey Island among the isletas, where you'll see wildlife and photograph monkeys in their habitat. The boat also stops at the fortress San Pablo, where you can step ashore and explore the ruins. Bring your camera: the bird life and water views make this the most photographed stretch of the day. The boat ride fee is separate from the tour price.

The final stop is Masaya Volcano, an active crater that has recently reopened. You stand at the edge of the Santiago crater and watch the orange glow of incandescent lava as the sun sets.
