Summary

Discover Wellington’s icons by cable car with a local guide

You’ll ride Wellington’s historic cable car with a local guide, gaze over city views from Mt Victoria, stroll lush gardens and Parliament’s grounds, then choose between exploring Weta Workshop or discovering rare wildlife at Zealandia Sanctuary. Expect small surprises—like fresh sea air at lunch—and moments that stick with you long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll never forget how the wind hit us up on Mt Victoria — not cold exactly, just that wild Wellington energy everyone talks about. Our guide, Mark, grinned and pointed out the city curling around the harbor below. I could smell coffee drifting up from somewhere (Wellington people take their flat whites seriously). We’d only just started but already it felt like we were seeing the city through someone who actually lives here.

The Wellington cable car was next — red and creaky in a comforting way. There was this older couple chatting in Māori behind us; I caught maybe three words but loved how natural it sounded. At the top, we wandered into a tiny museum full of old tickets and photos from when the cable car first ran in 1902. The view from there is different than Mt Victoria — more tucked-in, if that makes sense. You can see all these little houses stacked on green hillsides.

We strolled through the Botanic Gardens (I tried to name some flowers but gave up quickly), then stopped at Lady Norwood Rose Garden where everything smelled faintly sweet and earthy after last night’s rain. Lunch was at a seaside café — not included in the tour price, but honestly worth it for the fish pie alone. Mark told us stories about Wellington’s history while seagulls eyed our chips.

Later you get to pick: either dive into movie magic at Weta Workshop or go for a guided walk in Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary. I picked Zealandia because I wanted to see a real tuatara (they look like tiny dinosaurs). Our wildlife guide was so passionate — she even imitated bird calls for us, which cracked everyone up. I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a day trip around Wellington city, but there you go.
