The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel, the cruise port (no shuttle required, the driver collects you as you walk off the ship) or the iSite, then heads straight to Mount Victoria lookout for 360-degree views of the city, harbour and ocean. From there you drive south through Lyall Bay, Wellington's main surf beach, and continue along the coast past the site of the 1968 Wahine maritime disaster, which your guide explains in detail. The route is built around what you can't reach on foot and what matters most in a compact city where you're never more than 3 kilometres from a beach.
The Weta Cave stop is where you step out to see Lord of the Rings memorabilia and take photos with the cave trolls: the company that created the effects for the trilogy is based right here in Wellington. After that, you loop back through Oriental Bay, known for its man-made beach and expensive real estate, before boarding the Cable Car for a ride up to Kelburn suburb. The Cable Car admission is included, and your guide meets you at the top to show you the museum. Then you visit the Lady Norwood Rose Garden, part of the Botanical Gardens, which holds over 110 varieties of flowers and received the Garden of Excellence award in 2015. The tour concludes at Parliament grounds, where you see the Beehive (the Executive Wing), the bronze statue of Richard John Seddon (New Zealand's longest-serving Prime Minister), and the iron gates made during King George V's reign.
You travel in a BMW with no more than three passengers, so there's room to move and space for luggage. The driver is a local who can pivot the itinerary if you have specific interests, and bottled water is provided. Drop-off is flexible: the operator recommends Te Papa, the national museum, since it's central to most destinations in the city.
