The Experience

The first thing that hit me wasn’t the view—it was the wind. Jo laughed when my hair whipped across my face as we stepped out at the Mt Victoria lookout. “That’s Wellington for you,” she said, and honestly, I didn’t mind. The whole city below looked like a tilted puzzle of green hills and blue water, bits of sunlight sliding between clouds. I could smell salt in the air, mixed with something sweet from the cooler in Jo’s van (she’d packed these chewy ginger cookies—local bakery, apparently).

We rode the Wellington Cable Car without having to queue, which felt oddly VIP for someone who usually gets lost in train stations. The old red carriage rattled up through tunnels painted with moving lights—kids squealed every time we passed a mural. Suzee pointed out houses perched so high above Oriental Bay I wondered how anyone got groceries up there. She told us little things about Thorndon too—the oldest suburb, full of wooden villas and tangled gardens. There was this quick stop at Old St Paul’s Cathedral; I’m not religious but even I had to pause at the smell of polished wood and hush inside.

Somewhere along the south coast beaches, we stood watching waves slam into black rocks while Jo poured us coffee from a thermos. You could see all the way to the South Island if you squinted past the spray (or maybe that was just wishful thinking). A couple walking their dog waved at us like we were neighbors. Weta Workshop was an option too—though we didn’t do the full tour, just peered into movie props and tried to guess which film each monster belonged to. And yeah, there were dolphins out past Te Kopahou Reserve—or so Suzee swore; I just saw whitecaps.

It wasn’t perfect weather or perfect anything really, but it felt honest—like seeing Wellington through someone else’s favorite shortcuts. I still think about that wind sometimes when it’s too quiet at home.
