The Experience

“You can’t really know Wellington until you’ve felt the wind at the top of Mt Victoria,” Jo grinned as we hopped out of the van. She wasn’t kidding — my hair was everywhere and I could taste salt in the air, even though we were looking down over the whole harbor, city curling around it like a cat. The light changed every few minutes, clouds racing each other. Jo pointed out where the South Island sits on clear days — today it was just a ghostly outline. We lingered longer than planned because honestly, it felt good just standing there, wind in your jacket, locals jogging past without flinching.

We wound down to the south coast after that. The road got quieter, houses faded into flax and rocks. Suzee handed me a gingernut biscuit from their cooler (she said it’s a Kiwi classic — I get why) and we watched waves crash at Owhiro Bay. There was this sharp seaweed smell mixed with coffee from someone’s thermos nearby. A couple of kids were poking at driftwood; one waved at us like he knew our guide. It’s not a big city, Jo joked. I didn’t expect to feel so at home so quickly.

The cable car was next — no waiting in line because they’d sorted tickets already. It rattled up through tunnels painted with neon lights, then suddenly you’re above everything, gardens below like a patchwork quilt. The little museum at the top had these old uniforms and photos; Suzee told us about her first ride as a kid (she said she screamed). We wandered through the Botanic Garden afterwards — roses everywhere, bees humming so loud you almost have to pause your conversation.

I still think about how easy everything felt with them guiding us around Wellington for the day.
