What’s included

Your day includes pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle around Wānaka, guided storytelling from a local host with deep roots here, entry and tastings at two unique vineyards (with some flexibility if you have favorites), plus plenty of time to soak up both the flavors and stories before heading back.

We were already halfway up the drive to Maude when our guide, Hana, started telling us about her grandmother’s first memories of Lake Wānaka. Something about the way she described the morning mist rolling off the water made me forget I was here for a wine tour at all — it felt more like visiting someone’s family home. The air smelled faintly of wild thyme (or maybe that was just me wishing it did), and then suddenly we were inside, glasses in hand, swirling pinot noir while Hana explained how Māori have always read this land differently than settlers ever could.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a day trip for wine tasting in Wānaka. At Rippon, our second stop, one of the winemakers tried to teach us a bit of te reo Māori — I got “kia ora” right but totally blanked on the rest. Everyone just grinned and kept pouring. The wines had this kind of earthy brightness I can’t really describe; maybe it’s just what happens when you’re drinking them with people who actually live here. There was a moment where the sun hit the lake just so, and nobody said anything for a minute or two. That silence stuck with me.

The drive between vineyards was short but somehow stretched out — Hana pointed out old pā sites along the road, and I realized how little I knew about this region before today. It wasn’t rushed at all (even though they call it an “express” tour), more like being let in on something quietly special. We ended up talking about hangi cooking versus European cheese boards over our last glass — not sure who won that debate.
