The Experience

I’ll be honest — we almost missed the pickup because I couldn’t find my other shoe (classic). Giles, our guide, just grinned when we finally tumbled into the van. “No rush,” he said, and somehow I believed him. The drive out of Christchurch to Waipara was quieter than I expected; mist on the fields, sheep blinking at us like they’d seen it all before. Giles started talking about how Waipara’s got this odd microclimate — drier than most places nearby — and that’s why the wine tastes so different here. I didn’t really get it until later.

Pegasus Bay was our first stop. The gardens smelled like wet grass and something sweet I couldn’t name. Our group was only four people, so it felt more like tagging along with friends than a formal tour. The winemaker poured a riesling that tasted like green apples and honey but not too sweet — I’m not great at describing wine but even I noticed. Someone asked about food pairings and suddenly we were talking about local cheeses and lamb, which made me hungry way before lunch.

At Torlesse Wines, we got this big platter for lunch — bread still warm, salty olives, smoked salmon that left my fingers smelling briny for ages (not complaining). Giles told us to try pinot noir with the cheese; he was right. There was a moment where everyone just went quiet eating and sipping, which doesn’t happen much on tours like this. Maybe it was the view: vines running down to the river, sun finally breaking through. We met Kirk at Terrace Edge too — he waved from his tractor before coming over to talk about how he and Alison run things themselves. He looked tired but proud in a way you don’t see often.

I didn’t expect to laugh as much as we did or learn why Waipara wines have this edge — or feel so mellow by mid-afternoon that I forgot all about my missing shoe until we got back to Christchurch. Still think about that riesling sometimes.
