The experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Ōtautahi Christchurch by standing under the Bridge of Remembrance, listening to our guide Hana talk about her grandfather’s stories from the war. The river was quiet except for a few ducks, and there was this faint smell of coffee drifting over from somewhere. I couldn’t tell where at first. We were just a handful of people, all shuffling our feet a bit in the cool morning air. I liked that nobody seemed in a rush.

I tried repeating it (badly), which made her laugh. At one café stop, we tasted something called rewena bread: sour and warm, with butter that melted too fast. There was also this tangy local cheese I still think about.

Lunch came sooner than I expected: maybe because we’d been nibbling all along. It wasn’t fancy but felt like something you’d get at someone’s kitchen table: fresh fish, greens tossed with lemony dressing, and tea poured by a woman who told us she’d lived in Christchurch since before the earthquakes.
