The experience
The drive from Tauranga port takes 90 minutes to reach Wai-O-Tapu, a landscape of bubbling geysers and pools in shades of turquoise, orange, gold and green. The park's centerpiece is the Champagne Pool, ringed by mineral-rich terraces. If your ship arrives early enough, you may catch the 10:15 a.m. eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser. Three self-guided walking tracks range from easy to moderate and last between 40 and 75 minutes. Your guide walks alongside so you can set the pace and linger where the colors or the steam draw you.
Government Gardens, Rotorua's historic landmark, holds the Tudor-style Bath House (now the Rotorua Museum, currently closed for renovation), ancient bubbling geothermal pools, and Māori-inspired sculptures set in manicured grounds. At the lakefront, you'll see Te Arawa Whare Waka, a glass canoe house that holds the taonga (treasure) war canoe and symbolizes the deep cultural connection of the Te Arawa people to Lake Rotorua. Kuirau Park, still an active geothermal site in central Rotorua, offers a crater lake, mud pools and hot springs. The tour includes a free thermal foot bath in the park's flower-dotted setting.
On the return to Tauranga, the route passes the Kaituna River Falls (a five-meter drop in native forest with a viewing platform and history tied to traditional fishing), and Te Puke's kiwifruit orchards, where you can see the fruit in its growing stages. The final stretch runs along Marine Parade at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand's most popular beach, then past Mauao, the 232-meter lava dome that gives the region its name, before returning to the port.
