The day didn’t start exactly as planned—my coffee lid cracked right as our guide, Mike, waved us onto the minibus at the Tauranga port. I ended up with a sticky hand and a grin because he just shrugged and handed me a napkin, saying “Don’t worry, you’ll need both hands for photos anyway.” We rolled out past Mt Maunganui’s beaches and those wild surf sounds faded into green hills dotted with sheep. The air smelled like wet grass and something sweet I couldn’t place at first—turns out it was the kiwifruit blossoms. Mike pulled over at Kurt’s orchard (Kurt himself showed up in muddy boots), and we wandered under these tangled vines heavy with fruit. I tried to pronounce “Te Puke” properly; Kurt laughed but gave me a nod for effort.

After that it was all winding roads and sudden lake views—Lake Okareka glinting blue behind clusters of holiday homes, then on to Rotorua where the earth itself seemed to breathe. The geothermal steam hit me before we even entered Whakarewarewa village. It’s not like anything I’ve seen: wooden houses perched above bubbling mud pools, the faint smell of sulfur everywhere (not unpleasant after a while, honestly). Our local guide Mere led us through the paths—she pointed out where her grandmother used to cook corn in one of the hot springs. The concert inside their meeting house was intense; I still get goosebumps thinking about that haka. There’s this moment when everyone stomps and sings together—it shakes your chest a bit.

Lunch was at this café overlooking Lake Rotorua—a bit noisy with kids running around but the view made up for it. I ordered something with kumara (sweet potato) just because Mere said it was her favorite. Later we walked through Government Gardens—roses everywhere, couples posing by the old bathhouse—and then into real native forest: ferns taller than me, podocarps that looked ancient. Mike joked about Jurassic Park and Sam Neill being from New Zealand; someone tried a dinosaur roar and scared a tui bird off its branch.

The last stop was Kaituna River—hadn’t expected to feel so small next to all that rushing water. If you’re fit enough for the steps down (I counted 59 but maybe missed one), you get right beside it. On the drive back, my shoes were still muddy from Whakarewarewa but I didn’t care—I kept thinking about Mere’s story of her village surviving Mt Tarawera’s eruption across the lake. So yeah, not everything went smoothly but sometimes that’s what makes you remember a place longer.
