The experience

You leave Tauranga mid-morning and spend the drive inland taking in snacks and soft drinks while the landscape opens up. The centerpiece is Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, named one of the 20 most surreal places in the world. The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at 10:15am, shooting up to 20 meters high, and the Champagne Pool sits nearby naturally colored by mineral-rich water. Beyond those, the valley holds bubbling mud pools, steaming ground, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations sculpted by thousands of years of geothermal activity.

The Visitor Centre has a cafe and souvenirs if you want to linger, and the walk through the thermal features is leisurely. Time permitting, the route includes stops at Redwoods Forest Whakarewarewa, where 67-meter Californian Redwoods tower above an easy boardwalk over a thermal pond, and Sulphur Point on Lake Rotorua's southern end, where silky-colored water and geothermal vents attract around 60 native bird species. Government Gardens near Rotorua's center rounds out the optional stops if the schedule allows.

The drive back gives you time to review photos before you're dropped at the Port of Tauranga with a two-hour buffer before sailing. A live guide leads the whole day in English, and comfortable footwear is the main thing to bring.
