The experience

If you're arriving by ship in Tauranga or have a free afternoon, this tour picks you up and drives inland to Rotorua's geothermal zone. The route passes through Te Puke, the kiwifruit capital of New Zealand, with a stop at a working orchard so you can see how the region supplies roughly 184 million trays annually. From there, the landscape shifts as you enter Redwoods Forest Whakarewarewa, where over 5,600 hectares of Californian Coast Redwoods tower above walking tracks and forest trails. Your guide sets up a tasting table here with local kiwifruit and honey, a moment to pause in the quiet of the trees before moving on.

Te Puia is the centerpiece: you'll see Pohutu, the Southern Hemisphere's largest geyser, along with hot springs, boiling mud pools, a kiwi bird enclosure, and a Maori cultural performance and art center. The tour also takes in Government Gardens, a 50-acre lakeside park gifted to the crown by Maori people in the late 1800s, where you can walk the grounds and see Rachel hot spring (the historic buildings are currently under construction). A short stop at Kaituna Rapids and Trout Pool gives a view of the river's white water and its significance to local outdoor culture. You'll finish in Rotorua's city center and lakefront before the drive back to Tauranga.

Because the tour is private, your guide can tailor the stops and pace to what interests you most. If you're a cruise passenger, departure time aligns with your ship's schedule, and the meeting point is a two-minute walk from the Tauranga port. The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats up to 11, so families or small groups travel together without joining strangers.
